Starting from March 24, the traffic lights at the intersection of Rijksweg Centrum – Kummenaedestraat – Mauritslaan in Geleen will be replaced.

The work is expected to be completed by April 11, but the dates are subject to weather conditions and unforeseen circumstances. Work will be carried out from Monday to Friday, approximately from 07:00 to 19:00.

The underground cables, the lamps, the lamp covers, the push buttons, the control cabinet which houses the software will be replaced. New detection loops will be installed in the roads, which will detect the presence of cars, motorbikes and cyclists.

More traffic safety

There have been frequent accidents or near-accidents at this intersection because both the Mauritslaan and the Kummenaedestraat currently get green lights at the same time. This will be changed, so that the new traffic lights will no longer turn green simultaneously but sequentially. This will slightly increase waiting times, but efforts will be made to keep these as short as possible. Given the busy nature of the intersection, its proximity to the city centre, and the presence of a bus station, these changes are necessary to improve traffic safety.

Road crossings

The road crossings will also be adapted. The zebra crossings for pedestrians at the intersection will be removed. The new pedestrian traffic lights will be operational 24 hours a day, making zebra crossings unnecessary.

Roads open during work

During the work, all roads will remain open for traffic. The city centre will also remain accessible. Only one lane per direction will be open, which will cause some inconvenience. Traffic controllers will be deployed during peak hours. When work is in progress, the traffic lights will not be operational. The municipality will do its utmost to minimize inconvenience, but some disruption is inevitable. The municipality hopes for your understanding6.
