With the start of the Carnival season, the municipality of Sittard-Geleen is introducing a reusable cup system for all city-wide events.
This new system, which now applies to large events such as Carnival, the Sint Joep fair, and the Smartlappenfestival (Tearjerkers’ festival), contributes to a cleaner city, a more atmospheric experience of events, but most importantly, fewer plastic cups littering the streets.
Visitors of events pay a one-time fee of €1.00 for a reusable cup. Upon return, they receive a refund of €0.50 or can hold on to the cup for a next event. The cups that are collected at the end of each event are professionally cleaned for reuse.
From 2026, participation in the deposit system will be mandatory for establishments that use plastic cups during city-wide events. In 2025, entrepreneurs can participate voluntarily, and the municipality will support the launch of the system with an investment in 150,000 cups and 7,000 pitchers. In this way, the municipality of Sittard-Geleen makes the transition accessible and offers entrepreneurs the opportunity to adapt to the regulations for disposable plastic cups in a timely manner.
Visitors receive a plastic cup when they order their first drink at a fee of 1.00. For the next drink, they can exchange their cups or purchase a new one. Those who return their cup to a bar or return point receive a €0.50 refund. The return point for plastic cups can be recognized easily.
