The cross-border Interreg Vlaanderen-Nederland project Wine Street proudly welcomes two new partners as future wine hubs in the South of Limburg: Watersley in Sittard and Wijndomein D'Hunes in St. Geertruid.

This expansion is due to the withdrawal of one of the original partners and gives the project a fresh boost with two locations that perfectly align with the ambitions of the sustainable and innovative wine tourism project.

Strong addition to the wine street

Both Watersley and Wijndomein D'Hunes meet the strict selection criteria for wine hubs: a strategic location, historical value, sustainable facilities, and a strong network within the wine and tourism sector. The wine hubs will function as gateways to the cross-border wine regions within two years and offer visitors an inspiring introduction to wine, heritage, nature, and local products.

Wine hub Watersley

Watersley, as an international sports campus with a focus on vitality and well-being, is a unique addition to the wine hub network. Located in a monumental monastery on the edge of the Limburg hills, this location combines nature and city, heritage and innovation. Watersley has a small vineyard, a historic wine cellar, a monastery garden, and a tasting room. Situated on the Pieterpad, the Route des Vins, and important cycling junctions, Watersley offers an inspiring base for discovering the Zuid-Limburg wine culture. "Our international orientation and sustainable vision make Watersley a distinctive and welcoming location," says Joop Petit, Founding Partner of Watersley.

Wine hub Wijndomein D'Hunes

Wijndomein D'Hunes is firmly rooted in the local community and already serves functions as an accessible meeting place. With the winery on-site, the step towards an official role as a Wine Hub is a natural development that follows. "We feel strongly connected to the landscape, nature, and the tradition of viticulture in Mergelland. As a new Wine Hub, we want to contribute to the visibility of the region as a wine destination and let visitors taste and learn about the passion and quality produced locally," say Marc and Eedsje Huijnen, owners of Wijndomein D'Hunes.

About Wine Street

The Wine Street project (2024-2027) is a cross-border initiative within the Interreg Vlaanderen-Nederland programme, aimed at strengthening sustainable wine tourism in four wine regions: Hageland, Haspengouw, the Maasvallei, and Mergelland/Zuid-Limburg. The Wine Street will connect these regions physically and content-wise within two years through a long-distance cycling route, seven wine hubs, and a wine ecosystem of entrepreneurs. The project promotes the spread of tourism, strengthens the regional wine identity, and stimulates cross-border cooperation. The project is co-financed by EFRO and the project partners.
