From March 21 to October 31, 2025, the Dutch Tile Flipping Contest (NK Tegelwippen) will take place. Everyone in a participating municipality can take part by replacing tiles with plants or flowers.
The Tile Flipping Contest calls on residents to flip a few square metres of tiles in their front, back, or facade gardens and fill those spaces with flowers, plants, or shrubs.
In Limburg, 12 municipalities have joined forces this year to flip as many tiles as possible together. This is unique for The Netherlands. This joint effort will maximize the effect. Fewer tiles and more vegetation are better for various types of plants and animals, water drainage, and combats heat stress.
Alderman Leon Geilen: "Replacing a few tiles in your garden with plants and flowers can make a big difference. It is an easy way to green your environment. This will attract various types of animals such as birds and butterflies. And it facilitates water drainage. Together we will ensure a pleasant living environment and a climate-resistant city."
At the NK Tegelwippen, the aim is to replace as many tiles as possible with vegetation. Every resident can participate, and it is also very simple. Flip your tiles or stones out with a shovel, screwdriver, or chisel. Or borrow the Tegelwippakket (a tile flipping toolkit) from the municipality. Take a photo and report the number of flipped tiles. You can have the tiles picked up by the Tegeltaxi (Tile Taxi).
