BORN – The Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) has submitted an official request to the municipality to accommodate status holders (refugees with a residence permit) in the KaFra Tower, next to the former Amrâth Hotel on Langereweg in Born.
The people concerned have already been granted residence permits and are waiting to be assigned permanent housing in a municipality. The accommodation would be provided for at least one year.

Positive recommendation

The Municipal Executive (Mayor and Aldermen) has issued a positive recommendation to the municipal council regarding this request. The council will discuss the proposal on 2 July and make a final decision on 9 July. The municipality intends to count this accommodation toward its legal obligation to provide housing for status holders. Before the request was officially submitted, the COA and the owner of the property had already been in contact and reached an agreement. This is standard practice: property owners and the COA usually explore the possibilities together before submitting a formal request.
Before the accommodation can actually begin, the necessary municipal permits still need to be granted. As soon as more information becomes available, residents will be informed as thoroughly as possible.

Accommodation in the KaFra Tower

The owner of the KaFra Tower approached the COA about the possible use of the building. The COA then officially requested the municipality's cooperation in accommodating up to 120 status holders at the KaFra Tower, located at Langereweg 21 in Born.
The COA is requesting temporary accommodation for a minimum of one year. However, how long individual status holders stay depends on when suitable permanent housing becomes available. Since many of them are large families, this process may take longer. In addition, after the first year, the COA may submit a new request to continue using the same location for accommodation.
The municipality will inform residents about the request, the considerations involved, and the next steps. Residents will have the opportunity to ask questions and share any concerns or points of attention. The final decision rests with the municipal council.

Extra council session

During an extra council session on Thursday, July 2, the COA's request will be discussed in the council chamber. The political parties PIT, JA21, and Stadspartij Sittard-Geleen have submitted questions about the proposal. The meeting can also be followed via a live broadcast.
The extra session starts at 20:00. A recording of the meeting will also be available online.
