Cooperation without hassle: staying on course in Sittard-Geleen

On 7 April, follow-up discussions were held by gob (he largest political party in Sittard-Geleen) with CDA, PRO Sittard-Geleen (the new name for GroenLinks-PvdA), D66, and VVD, building on earlier information meetings.

The atmosphere was positive and constructive, and it was noted there are no real breaking points between the parties. All the above-mentioned parties broadly want to continue with the existing policy and pragmatically execute this policy.

This was announced by the gob informants Yvonne Salvino, Leon Geilen, and Pieter Meekels on Tuesday 14 April.

Financial resources for the next few years are tight.  There is some budget available each year, but major new plans must fit within the existing priorities. Parties must therefore make choices and possibly rearrange priorities.

Furthermore, it appears that cooperation with four parties is considered more feasible than with five. Although slight preferences were expressed, all parties are in principle open to collaboration. There is still no agreement on the number of aldermen to be appointed (6 or 7).

Important themes for the future are stability, continuity, and administrative strength.

All things considered, a coalition of gob, CDA, PRO Sittard-Geleen, and D66 is the preferred option. 

According to these parties, this combination offers the best foundation for stable governance and tackling upcoming challenges. The next step concerns further talks to reach a concrete coalition agreement. These discussions will take place on 20 and 21 April.
