THE HAGUE (ANP) – The nationwide ban on consumer fireworks will be in effect during the upcoming New Year's Eve celebrations. State Secretary Annet Bertram (Environment) has formally adopted the decision that enacts the law.
The House of Representatives had already approved a nationwide ban in 2025, following an initiative by PRO and the Partij voor de Dieren.

Adjustments

Before the ban could officially take effect, the State Secretary still had to arrange several matters, including compensation for fireworks retailers and the possibility of organizing community fireworks displays.
Following advice from the Council of State, several adjustments were made regarding the latter. For example, the distance requirements for community fireworks displays are now the same as those for professional displays. In addition, fireworks associations must have a local connection to the place where the fireworks are set off. Municipalities will be responsible for granting exemptions to fireworks clubs.

Enforcement

A final condition set by the House of Representatives was the introduction of an enforcement plan. Among other measures, collection days will be organized for people who still have fireworks at home.
The final decision to implement the ban was published on Wednesday, July 1, and will therefore officially enter into force on August 1. Several parties in the House of Representatives wanted to postpone the ban for another year, but their proposal did not receive majority support.
