The plans for the new Huis aan de Markt are becoming clearer. This building will have a prominent position in the city centre of Sittard.
Together with Berden, the municipality is working on a strong and modern building, which will be a central meeting spot for residents, visitors, and the municipality. If everything goes well, construction will start in January 2026 and doors will open in 2027.
Residents and entrepreneurs have contributed to the design. The city council has also provided its wishes and ideas. Many people wanted the old facade of the historic Town Hall to return, to ensure that the building retains a piece of history. At the same time, the building will be completely new and modern. It will be a sustainable building, energy-efficient and constructed with sturdy, reusable materials. It will also be accessible for everyone, including people with disabilities.
"We will combine history, governance, and hospitality in one building," says Alderman Andries Houtakkers.
The Huis aan de Markt will have a new city council chamber where the political decisions will be taken during council meetings. There will also be workspaces for political parties. Additionally, it will feature a large hall for weddings and gatherings. For visitors, there will be public toilets, also for disabled persons. It is still being considered whether a bicycle parking facility can be added on the Plakstraat side of the building. On the ground floor, there will be a welcoming space for visitors to the city. A place where people get information or meet each other. Further details are currently being discussed.
During the construction, attention will be paid to sustainability and accessibility. The building will be energy efficient. There will be wide entrances, an elevator, and adapted toilets. The interior will be spacious and light, creating a pleasant environment for those who visit the building.
The building permit is expected to be issued at the end of 2025. Construction will start at the beginning of 2026, if everything goes according to plans. The building will be ready for use at the end of 2027.
