Official start redevelopment Wilhelminastraat, Engelenkampstraat and Tempelplein in Sittard

SITTARD – This week, the municipality officially started the redevelopment of Wilhelminastraat, Engelenkampstraat and Tempelplein.

Alderman Geilen is pleased that the project is moving from the drawing board into the execution phase. He is particularly focused on the final result:“This is the beginning of a very large and impactful project. A project of this scale will not go unnoticed. Many residents, visitors and business owners will be affected in one way or another. That is why we are placing extra emphasis on proper traffic management and communication, and we are also ensuring that the city centre remains easily accessible at all times.”

“What is special about this starting moment is that there is already a preview: the area around the intersection of Parklaan and Wilhelminastraat has already been completed. Everyone can now see how beautiful it will become and how the separated cycle paths improve traffic safety. A lot is also happening underground, and although this will no longer be visible later, it is very important for the future resilience of the city centre.”

With BESIX, the municipality has found a contractor that fully supports this vision. Director Mario Goossens:“With this project, we are preparing the centre of Sittard for the future. In a city where many things are happening at once, it is important that daily life can continue as usual. At the same time, we are working step by step towards a city centre that will once again be pleasant and attractive for everyone.”

With this start, the work has now truly begun. The project is expected to run until the end of 2027.
