BERLIN (ANP/DPA) – At many petrol stations in Germany, the price per litre of petrol fell below 2 euros on Friday. This is the result of a temporary reduction of excise duties of around 17 cents, which was introduced to ease the pain of rising fuel prices caused by the war in the Middle East.
This previously announced measure came into effect on Friday 1 May and will apply until the end of next month.

Significantly less than 2 euros

According to the app of the German automobile association ADAC, petrol at many stations now costs even significantly less than 2 euros, sometimes even less than 1.90 euros per litre. In parts of Germany, diesel is also being sold for less than 2 euros per litre.
For comparison: in The Netherlands, the cheapest petrol station according to the ANWB is located in the province of Drenthe, where motorists pay just under 2.15 euros per litre for petrol.
The Dutch petrol station industry has complained for some time that, due to the large price differences, more and more Dutch people are crossing the border to refuel. As a result, Dutch petrol stations in the border areas have seen a significant drop in customers.
