Between 2025 and 2027, reconstruction work will be carried out on roads, water, and squares in the centre of Sittard. Residents, entrepreneurs, and visitors will have to find alternative routes from A to B temporarily. The shops in the city centre will always be accessible as no work will be done in the inner city.
These are the locations of the reconstruction work
The map below indicates where we will be working: Wilhelminastraat and Engelenkampstraat, Tempelplein, Parklaan, De Wieër, Rijksweg Noord from the Vouerweg intersection to the roundabout at Milieuparkweg.
The first week of work at the Wilhelminastraat–Engelenkampstraat–Parklaan intersection is complete. Several streets around the centre of Sittard are closed to motorized traffic. This is to prevent cut-through traffic. Residents and entrepreneurs have asked the municipality to improve the detour routes and closures, and the municipality has also identified some improvements. As a result, adjustments have been made in the past few days.
For example, traffic lights have been adjusted for a better flow of traffic, additional traffic signs have been placed, and closures have been modified. We will continue doing this in the coming period. If we notice that something can be improved, further adjustments will be made immediately.
If you have any ideas or questions, you can send an email to: [email protected] or call 088 130 06 00.
Traffic is being diverted with yellow detour signs for routes E and K. Buses will also have to take a different route. For more information, visit the special Arriva page: arriva.nl/sittard. Parking lots and garages will remain accessible to motorized traffic for as long as possible.
Measures against cut-through traffic (road closures)
To protect residents and entrepreneurs from cut-through traffic in their streets, several streets have been closed with road blocks on one side for motorized traffic. Cyclists, mobility scooters, and pedestrians can enter these streets from both sides. A section of Parallelweg (between house numbers 2 to 57) is completely closed to all traffic. The homes in the parallel streets to Parallelweg between numbers 2 and 57 are, of course, still accessible.
The map below shows which streets are closed on one side.
How long will the detours and closures last?
The municipality expects the work at the Wilhelminastraat intersection to last until February 2026. The detours and closures will likely remain in place longer. We will be working on roads, water, and squares in more places in the centre of Sittard. We will not be working in the shopping streets, so the shops will always be accessible.
