On August 18, the municipality of Sittard-Geleen started preparatory work for a short-term parking trial on the Nieuwe Markt in Geleen.

The trial itself will begin in the first week of September and will initially last for three months.

Maximum one year

After this trial period, the municipality will evaluate the initial results and incorporate any improvements. Subsequently, the trial will be extended for up to one year. With this trial, the municipality aims to make it easier for visitors to quickly and efficiently complete their (daily) shopping in the centre of Geleen.

The municipality will temporarily redesign the market. Parking spaces will be marked on the ground and traffic signs will be placed. There will also be movable tree containers and benches. The picture above shows the new design. During the work, there may be noise disturbance. The municipality asks for understanding.

What does the parking trial entail?

Visitors can park free of charge for a maximum of 30 minutes on the Nieuwe Markt. They do this by placing a blue parking disc behind the windshield. Short-term parking is allowed from Monday through Friday from 08:00 AM to 06:30 PM. Vehicles parked longer or outside the permitted times will be fined or removed.

The location of the Saturday street market will not be changed. The flea market will take place on the Markt opposite the old town hall, and the fresh produce stalls will be placed on the Markt, next to the Galfetti building.

Evaluation

After the trial period, the new approach will be evaluated. The municipality will consider the experiences of visitors, entrepreneurs, and residents. The results of this evaluation will be shared with the public. Based on the evaluation, the municipality will decide whether and how short-term parking on the Nieuwe Markt will be continued.

Loading and unloading vehicles

Entrepreneurs are aware of the new situation. Loading and unloading on the market will soon only be possible with vehicles up to 10 metres long. Larger vehicles must use the traffic lock on Salmstraat.
