The Bergerweg and the Oude Postbaan (western and eastern sections) will be closed from May 22 through June 1, 2026, near the Graetheide viaduct over the A2 motorway.
During this period, Rijkswaterstaat will connect the underlying road network to the new viaduct.
As part of the widening of the A2 motorway, the Graetheide viaduct is being replaced. Part of the new viaduct has already been constructed alongside the current one. To connect the Bergerweg to the new viaduct, the Bergerweg will be rerouted. As a result, the connections between the Oude Postbaan and the Bergerweg will also be adjusted.
Why this closure?
Two options were considered for connecting the roads to the new viaduct:
- a short closure in May 2026, or
- postponement until after May 2027, when the renovation of the Urmond bridge is completed.
Rijkswaterstaat prefers a closure in 2026, and the Municipality of Stein agrees. Waiting until 2027 would mean that cyclists on the Bergerweg would have to deal with the current, less safe situation for more than another year.
Limited disruption
Rijkswaterstaat and the municipality understand that this closure is inconvenient for local residents and road users, especially in combination with the work on the Urmond bridge. The closure will last nine days, including two weekends and Whit Monday.
As a result, there will only be four working days with additional rush-hour traffic. Traffic counts show that the diversion routes can handle the traffic and that no major problems are expected at this time.
Accessibility
Cars and cyclists will be diverted via local routes. The Bergerweg will remain accessible for emergency services. There will temporarily be more traffic on Molenweg-Noord, Molenweg-Zuid, and Mauritslaan.
To ensure safety, speed indicators and traffic controllers will be deployed at key intersections.
