Overview of Memorial Ceremonies in Sittard-Geleen on May 4

On Sunday, May 4, it is National Remembrance Day. Throughout The Netherlands, people pause to remember those who died due to war.

Besides the national commemorations there will also be local ones in Sittard-Geleen. Everyone can attend the commemorations. Below you will find an overview of the commemorations in our municipality.

Overview of the commemorations

Overhoven – 11:00 AM: Church service in the Heilig Hartkerk. Afterwards, flowers will be laid at the Village Cross and the grave of British soldier John Alexander Devine at the General Cemetery.3

Born – 4:00 PM: Flower laying at the war memorial at the lock.

Obbicht – 6:00 PM: Commemorations at the monuments on Langs de Beek and Brugstraat.

Grevenbicht – 6:00 PM: Start at the Podiumkerkje. Then, in silence, a procession past various graves and monuments.

Sittard – 6:30 PM: Church service in the St. Petruskerk. Then a silent march to the monument at the Market Square and the cemetery.

Einighausen – 7:30 PM: Gather at the church, followed by a commemoration at the cemetery.

Limbricht – 7:30 PM: Commemoration at the cemetery near the Salviuskerkje.

Geleen – 7:50 PM: Commemoration at the Flower Market in Lindenheuvel, followed by a commemoration called the Children's Monument.

At 8:00 PM sharp, The Netherlands observes two minutes of silence. Together, we reflect on freedom, loss, and unity.
