Region – In the hillside forests between Berg and Meerssen lies a former marl quarry: the Curfs Quarry.
For more than 70 years, marl was extracted in the Curfs Quarry. During the marl mining period, the quarry was strictly off-limits, and thus it remained hidden from the human eye for a long time. Now that Het Limburgs Landschap (The Limburg Landscape Foundation) has taken over the management, part of the quarry has been made accessible to the public.
From the viewpoint, visitors can look over and into the quarry, seeing the 50-meter-high cliffs and the deep quarry floor below.
The deep location of the marl quarry creates its own dynamic and microclimate—weather and wind have free rein here. From time to time, large chunks of rock fall down with a thundering crash. Because of the depth, sunlight is intense, and heat is retained for a long time. In contrast, the shady forested slopes maintain a cool and moist climate. This combination results in the presence of many special plants and animals.
To preserve this rich natural environment and prevent the quarry from becoming overgrown with forest, a herd of Dutch land goats roams the area. Their grazing keeps shrubs and forest growth in check.
On Sunday, October 12 and Saturday, October 18, Het Limburgs Landschap is organizing guided excursions in the Curfs Quarry starting at 10:00 a.m., lasting about two hours.More information about participation and ticket reservations can be found at: limburgs-landschap.nl/kalender.
Part of the Curfs Quarry is closed to the public due to the danger of falling rocks and the presence of valuable natural habitats. There are no designated walking paths in this area, so sturdy walking shoes are required, and a walking stick may be helpful for maintaining balance.
This walk is not suitable for people with limited mobility, and dogs are not allowed on this excursion
