The A2 motorway in central Limburg will be completely closed between the Het Vonderen and Kerensheide junctions from Friday evening, 14 November, 21:00 until Monday morning, 17 November, 05:00. Major traffic disruption is expected, with diversions in place and additional journey times exceeding 60 minutes.

Rijkswaterstaat will carry out works at several locations simultaneously during that weekend. Please be prepared for severe traffic congestion on the motorway and surrounding roads. International diversions will be in effect, with additional travel times ranging from 15 to 45 minutes. On local and regional diversion routes, the extra travel time may exceed 60 minutes. In case of bad weather, the closure may be postponed to the weekend of 21 to 24 November. A final decision will be made shortly before that weekend.

First of seven weekend closures until 2029

This is the first in a series of seven weekend closures required up to 2029 to enable the widening of the A2.During this first closure, from Friday 14 November at 21:00 to Monday 17 November at 05:00, the A2 will be fully closed in both directions between the Het Vonderen and Kerensheide junctions.

On this 18-kilometre stretch, as much work as possible will be combined during weekends in order to limit the number of closures and reduce traffic disruption over the coming years.

What will happen?

During this weekend, Rijkswaterstaat will be carrying out, among other things:

  • Relocation of cables and pipelines for the new A2.
  • Demolition of the Slagmolen and ’t Rooth viaducts.
  • Replacement of a culvert in the Geleenbeek under the A2.
  • Removal of a derelict culvert under the A2.
  • Vegetation clearance.
  • Adjustments to roadside furniture and connecting infrastructure.

Diversions and traffic disruption

During the weekend, regional diversion routes will be in place via junction Genk-Oost (32) – N75 – N78 and Susteren – Echt (N276).

For national and international traffic, large-scale diversions will apply via Antwerp and Mönchengladbach.Additional travel time could exceed 60 minutes.

Many drivers are expected to choose alternative routes, resulting in increased traffic on provincial and local roads in central and southern Limburg.

Advice to road users

Rijkswaterstaat urges drivers to adjust their travel plans:

  • Postpone your journey if possible.
  • Use an alternative mode of transport where available.
  • Check live traffic updates before departure at rwsverkeersinfo.nl.
  • Follow diversion signs and directions along the route.

Additional disruption: weekend of 28–30 November

In addition to the first major weekend closure, further traffic disruption is expected in the weekend of 28 November.Due to maintenance work, the A2 towards Maastricht will be closed between junctions 44 (Sint Joost) and 45 (Echt) from Friday evening, 28 November, 21:00 until Sunday afternoon, 30 November, 13:00.
