The Municipality of Sittard-Geleen has closed the 2025 financial year with a positive financial result of €1.7m.
The surplus is lower than in previous years because the December budget circular brought only limited additional funding from The Hague, and because several budgets had already been transferred to 2026. This is evident from the municipality’s 2025 annual accounts.
Eventful year
“2025 was once again a very eventful year,” says Alderman for Finance and Resources Ivo Tillie. “Progress was made on various projects such as Glanerbrook. We are working on the housing challenge, sustainability, strong social safety nets, maintenance and improvement of infrastructure, and much more. At the same time, we maintain control over our resources so that we can steer effectively in changing times, which will become increasingly necessary.”
In 2025, issues such as rising living costs, energy prices, labour shortages, and growing demand for care remained high on the agenda. Despite increasing costs and various challenges, the municipality continued to invest heavily in housing, sustainability, the economy, culture, and quality of life. However, the municipality expects financial pressure to increase, particularly due to rising costs and reduced national government funding in several areas.
Housing programme
Significant progress was made in addressing the housing challenge. Through the housing programme “Good Living in Sittard-Geleen 2025–2030,” the municipality worked on providing sufficient and suitable housing in both urban and rural areas. Progress was also made in area development projects such as those around Chemelot and in the sustainability improvements of business parks.
In the social domain, the municipality focused on inclusion, prevention, and participation. The social development company Vidar once again played an important role in supporting residents with employment, education, and income opportunities. In addition, efforts continued to tackle poverty and debt through projects such as “Op de Rit” and “Samen Kundig.”
Sustainability
Sustainability remained a key priority. Heat transition plans were developed for several neighbourhoods and villages. The natural-gas-free neighbourhood pilot project in Limbrichterveld-Noord continued. More than 2,500 homes received energy-efficiency advice, and over 650 homes were insulated.
Strong year for events
Sittard-Geleen also enjoyed another successful year of events. Festivals and events such as the Oktoberfees Sittard, Mama’s Pride, Popronde, and St Rosa attracted large numbers of visitors and contributed to the municipality’s vibrancy and appeal.
Investments were also made in culture and municipal facilities. Work continued on the future of De Domijnen and Museum Het Nieuwe Domein, while progress was made on the modernisation of municipal accommodation, including the Huis aan de Markt in Sittard and Vidar’s new premises.
According to the municipal executive, the financial outlook for municipalities remains uncertain due to rising costs and expanding responsibilities. Finance Alderman Ivo Tillie therefore remains cautious:
“We see significant risks ahead. There are still many uncertainties about the level of funding we can expect from The Hague in the future. In the longer term, we may have to make difficult choices in order to remain financially healthy.”
