Open Monument Days on 13 and 14 September
This year’s themes of the Open Monument Days on Saturday 13 September and Sunday 14 September are Heritage and Architecture.
The Open Monument Day Sittard Geleen working group has translated this theme into: ‘Built to last – heritage and architecture to cherish and preserve’.
Numerous buildings
With the help of an attractively designed booklet, the working group will take you on a walking or cycling tour along many well-known and perhaps less-known buildings in our municipality. The routes shown in the brochure highlight various buildings and their architects. These include older buildings with a monumental status, but also some more recent buildings that stand out due to their unique design and are also built to last.
On September 13 and 14, various buildings along the different routes will be open to visitors. For example, there will be continuous tours between 12:00 and 15:00 on Saturday and Sunday in the newly renovated building of the housing association ZOwonen, the former Land van Gulick girls' school, on Engelenkampstraat in Sittard. Here, you can also watch a film about the architecture and a film about the current user of the building while enjoying a cup of coffee.
Special location
A very special location that will be accessible for visits is Parklaan 15 in Sittard. This building served as the office and residence of the architect Jos Wielders (1883-1949). Just as the Rietveld Schröder House in Utrecht is an absolute must for architecture and interior enthusiasts, the same applies to this former office and residence of Wielders. He designed the building in the style of the ‘Nieuwe Bouwen’ (a modern movement in architecture), a term used to describe the modern architecture that developed in the 1920s.
On Saturday and Sunday, the building will open its doors to visitors from 10:00 to 17:00. The current users, the employees of the AC&T consultancy firm, will gladly welcome you and enthusiastically share the hidden gems and beautiful details that can be discovered in every room.
Thanks to the efforts of many volunteers and with the support of the Regional Archive, such initiatives are possible during the Open Monument Days.
