The Province of Limburg is calling on mediator Sybrand Buma and the political parties forming a new Dutch government to devote extra attention to industry and the future of the Chemelot chemical complex.
According to the province, more and more companies on the site are facing difficulties, partly due to high energy costs and challenges in becoming more sustainable. “At Chemelot, it really is a case of ‘just before midnight’, so it is high time for the national government to move from good plans to decisive action,” states the province, speaking also on behalf of Limburg municipalities, employers, and Chemelot itself.
Limburg asserts that investing in sustainability currently does not pay off for companies at Chemelot, partly due to additional levies on CO₂ emissions. According to the province, these costs are “much lower just ten kilometres across the border,” and there is a risk that companies may collapse or relocate as a result. Recently, chemical company Fibrant announced plans to close factories at Chemelot, citing high production costs among the reasons. The province believes that the new cabinet should reduce energy prices and make agreements with companies at Chemelot to help them become greener.
Limburg parties also argue that work on the necessary infrastructure should proceed more quickly, such as constructing pipelines for ammonia and hydrogen along the Delta Rhine Corridor between Rotterdam and the German border, and connecting Limburg to wind energy from the North Sea. “The construction of the 380 kV connection to Limburg is of national importance, as it is crucial for the security of energy supply and the sustainability of Dutch industry.”
