SITTARD – Several ash trees on Sportcentrumlaan have been found to suffer from ash dieback. This is a fungus which has already affected multiple ash trees in Sittard.
This fungus causes ash tree branches to die off slowly. Eventually, the entire tree can perish.

Danger of falling branches

Dead branches can fall, and especially when they are large, pose a risk. Therefore, the municipality will now cut down several trees that have been too badly damaged to recover. Unfortunately, no treatment is available.
On Thursday 23 April, the contractor will begin removing the trees that have been affected by the fungus. They expect everything to be finished by Friday 1 May. The road will not be completely closed. The contractor will divide the Sportcentrumlaan into two sections. In this way, the Sportcentrumlaan will always be accessible from one side.
New trees will be planted in the autumn. Trees will be selected that are less susceptible to disease, although it not yet clear which species will be chosen.
