The Netherlands is allocating €248 million for drones for the Ukrainian armed forces. Defence Minister Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius announced this during a meeting of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group (UDCG). The drones will be manufactured both in The Netherlands and Ukraine.
“Drones play a crucial role on the modern battlefield. Ukrainians deploy them extremely skilfully to repel the relentless Russian attacks. They are highly successful in this. Thanks to our effective cooperation with Ukraine, we can learn directly from them. This also offers opportunities for our business sector. The close partnership with Ukraine thus creates a direct win-win situation for both countries.” - Minister Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius.
Born
Ukraine will build long-range drones in the VDL factory at Born. These include a combat drone and a reconnaissance drone, the K4 Deepstrike and the Midstrike Plane Baton.
VDL and the Ukrainian company Greentech Harvest signed a declaration of intent for co-production in Born on Thursday in Middelburg. The exact start date remains confidential but is expected to commence sometime this year.
Hundreds of thousands of drones
Drones are a key priority in Dutch military support for Ukraine. The Netherlands has contributed to the so-called Drone Line Initiative, making hundreds of thousands of drones available to Ukrainian soldiers at the front.
Over four years of war with Russia, Ukraine has developed into a military drone powerhouse. Drones dominate the current battlefield there.
