Tens of thousands of visitors from the entire region and beyond visit the Sint Joep Market in Sittard every year. An annual market where you will find a colourful collection of products.
The market has been popular for more than 200 years. The first Sint Joep Market was held on March 19, 1803. The mayor of Sittard received permission from Napoleon Bonaparte for this market, which was originally a cattle market until the end of the 19th century.
The Sint Joep Market is not only the first annual market of the year but also the largest in The Netherlands. More than five kilometres of stalls line up through the historic city centre of Sittard. Many of the market vendors promote their goods in an original way. This makes the market a very special and attractive event which appeals to many visitors.
The Sint Joep Market starts at 8:00 AM and ends at 5:00 PM.
Every year, a market vendor is chosen as 'King of Sint Joep'. Last year, the title was awarded to Corné van den Berg, who sells plants and trees from his truck. "This is one of the most beautiful prizes a market vendor can win. I am very happy with it," said a proud Corné. The jury also spontaneously created a new prize: the prize for emerging talent. This went to the 21-year-old Charlotte Simons. She impressed the public with her spontaneous sales style. The jury noticed her joy and were pleased to see that a new generation of market vendors is emerging.
On Wednesday, March 19, the jury will choose a new King of St. Joep.
