(ANP) – Dutch Railways (NS) will increase the prices of train tickets and most of season tickets by an average of 4.7% next year. This means that travelling by train will become more expensive at a rate higher than inflation.
"We want everyone to continue choosing the train and want to keep rail travel in The Netherlands affordable. At the same time, revenue from train tickets is needed to purchase new, comfortable trains, to cover rising costs and to continue investing in good facilities”, explains Daan Schut, who is responsible for fares on the NS management board.

Rover criticises additional price increase

Passenger organisation Rover understands that NS is passing on inflation-related increases in 2027, but objects to the additional 1 percentage point increase, which it describes as a catch-up adjustment.
Rover is responding to NS's announcement that train ticket prices will rise by an average of 4.7% in 2027.
Rover director Daan Zieren:"The success of the inexpensive Dal Vrij season ticket last summer showed that demand for affordable public transport is very high. Now that NS is finally seeing passenger numbers grow again, travellers are once more being punished with a substantial fare increase. By continually making maximum use of the scope that NS is given to raise fares, the company is effectively holding back further passenger growth itself.”
Rover also describes the increase in the minimum fare for short journeys to €3.10 as “unnecessary and discouraging for passengers”.
However, Rover is pleased that NS will now also offer the so-called PrijsTijdDeal discounts through its app on the actual day of travel. Currently, passengers must purchase these discounted tickets at least one day in advance.
