Pay close attention in your garden or shed! In the spring, as soon as the weather turns warmer, the queens of the invasive Asian hornets start building small starter nests again.
These are called embryo nests. The nests are about the size of a ping-pong ball or a tennis ball.
They prefer building these small nests low down and in sheltered spots such as sheds, garages, garden houses, and bird boxes. They also choose inconspicuous locations, for example, in a corner or against the ceiling. Outdoors, they also make nests in hedges and bushes, in climbing plants or wood piles. Or in parks, cemeteries, allotments, bicycle shelters, and under bridges.

What does an embryo nest look like?

It is a small ball made from greyish-brown material that resembles paper. The opening is at the bottom of the nest, allowing the queen to fly in and out. The queen is often the only ‘resident’ of such an embryo nest. You can see what the nest looks like in the picture below.
The nests are now still small and can be removed more easily. Removing them now means the nest cannot grow bigger in the summer. In doing so, we protect our bees and look after our animals, plants, and safety.

Reporting an Asian hornet nest

If you spot a nest of the Asian hornet, please take a photo if possible and report it via the Fixi website or app. With your report, the municipality’s pest controller can take immediate action and investigate the location.
