Anniversary year: Sittard-Geleen 25 years as one municipality
In 2026, Sittard-Geleen will celebrate its 25th anniversary. A milestone the municipality will mark throughout the entire year, together with residents, associations, entrepreneurs, and institutions.
Not with a single moment, but with an anniversary year full of encounters, stories, and activities, spread across all neighbourhoods and districts.
The anniversary year was kicked off at the Toon Hermans Theatre during the New Year’s reception on Tuesday January 6. Mayor Hans Verheijen officially opened the festive year in the presence of residents, representatives of associations, and local organisations. As the first official part of the anniversary programme, a new municipal coat of arms and a new municipal flag were presented.
The central theme is: 25 years as one municipality. An invitation that emphasises connection. Personal stories from residents form an important common thread throughout this anniversary year. Well-known and unknown stories, from all parts of the municipality, are told by the residents themselves.

A year full of activities, throughout the entire city
During the anniversary year, there is something to experience all year round. From small-scale neighbourhood initiatives organised by residents to cultural projects, sporting activities, and public events linked to existing events in the city. The anniversary aligns with what already exists and gives it extra visibility.

To support residents and local organisations in the celebrations, the municipality is introducing a funding scheme. With this scheme, the municipality aims to encourage and financially support initiators from the neighbourhoods in organising activities and events around the anniversary. The anniversary year is not only a celebration, but also a moment to create new connections and strengthen collaborations. The energy and initiatives from 2026 form a foundation for the years that follow, in which Sittard-Geleen continues to build a committed and resilient city.
