The municipal coat of arms is the official symbol of the municipality and is used for official purposes, but until now the city of Sittard-Geleen did not yet have one (because of the merger of Sittard, Geleen and Born in 2001).
The municipality now marks its 25th anniversary - a special milestone and the moment to present a new municipal coat of arms as well as a new municipal flag.
On Tuesday, 6 January, Jonkheer Mr. J.P. de Savornin Lohman, Chairman of the High Council of Nobility presented the municipal coat of arms granted by the King of The Netherlands during the New Year’s reception at the Toon Hermans Theatre. The official coat-of-arms diploma was handed over to Mayor Hans Verheijen.
The design of the coat of arms has been carefully composed of elements from the former municipal coats of arms of the eight former villages and towns. Deliberately, no single historical coat of arms was taken as the starting point; instead, a design was chosen that has the broadest possible support and is fully heraldically sound. Colours from the old coats of arms - red, blue, silver, and gold - have been brought together.
Recognisable symbols have also been incorporated, such as the cross with serpent heads and the tower of the castle in Born. Research and expert advice from a heraldist, as well as coordination with a council working group, led to this design.
The municipal flag is inextricably linked to the coat of arms and is derived directly from it. The flag makes the coat of arms recognisable in colour and shape and can be used during official or festive occasions at which Sittard-Geleen presents itself.
In this way, the flag forms a visible sign of pride and connection for all residents, according to the municipality. The flag will soon be available at the Visit Zuid-Limburg Experience Centre in Sittard-Geleen.
King Willem-Alexander, on the proposal of the Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations and after advice from the High Council of Nobility, has decided to grant the municipality of Sittard-Geleen a municipal coat of arms. The official description of this coat of arms is as follows:
Azure and gules parts; overall a parted double serpent-head cross, parted of gold and silver; on a shield of gold a tower with three battlements of gules, pierced with three windows of the field. The shield ensigned with a golden crown of five leaves.
The municipal coat of arms will be used for official municipal documents such as marriage booklets and mayoral stationery. The municipal coat of arms is also incorporated into the mayor’s chain of office.
With this new municipal coat of arms and municipal flag, the municipality establishes a shared symbol for the future of the 25-year-old municipality.
