Grid operator Enexis fears that it may have to temporarily shut down parts of the electricity network during cold winter days in areas of Limburg, as well as in the provinces of Groningen, Drenthe, Overijssel, and North Brabant.

On cold days with heavy frost, consumers and businesses use large amounts of electricity at the same time - for example, to heat their homes. However, the already full power grid in some Enexis regions cannot handle this increased demand.

This could also happen in parts of Sittard-Geleen, especially around the Lutterade electrical substation.

Measures

To prevent overloading of the grid, Enexis is taking measures. The grid operator calls on companies and households in those provinces to use less electricity between 07:00 and 10:00 a.m. and between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m. on very cold days, and to spread their electricity use more evenly throughout the day.

Enexis is also investigating whether companies could be required – with a compensation - to reduce their electricity consumption at certain times. The operator believes such measures could help manage the expected peaks, but it cannot guarantee that this will be sufficient.

Partial power shutdowns

If these measures are not enough, Enexis says that “in the most extreme cases,” it will temporarily shut down parts of the power grid in 22 areas. During that time, businesses and households would have no electricity. The duration depends on how long the peak demand lasts - possibly a few hours.

“Unfortunately, this situation could repeat itself for several consecutive days if the cold weather persists,” the grid operator warns.

According to Enexis, shutting down parts of the grid is necessary to prevent damage to cables or substations, which could otherwise lead to prolonged power outages.

Preparation

Enexis advises residents and businesses to prepare for hours-long power outages, e.g. by keeping a flashlight at home and checking emergency power supplies for critical business operations.

They also recommend:

  • Having batteries and a charged power bank ready.
  • Avoiding electricity use during peak hours.
  • Charging electric cars outside of peak hours.
  • Using solar power directly as it’s generated.
  • Turning off unnecessary devices.
