Born – Two manufacturers specializing in unmanned military vehicles and drone batteries are establishing operations at the VDL plant in Born, marking a significant shift in the site’s post-automotive future.
Milrem Robotics and Tulip Tech will begin production in the former car plant in Limburg, once home to large-scale automotive assembly.
With unmanned technologies such as kamikaze drones, autonomous vehicles, and robotic systems now dominating modern warfare, global demand for these systems has surged. While Ukraine is urgently seeking drones for its defence, The Netherlands and other Western allies are also accelerating efforts to expand their capabilities.
The first contracts with Milrem Robotics and Tulip Tech were signed on Monday morning. The Dutch Ministry of Defence said the projects could create hundreds of jobs, depending on the number of future orders.
Dutch drone manufacturer DeltaQuad has also signed a letter of intent to start production in Born.
“These contracts meet several needs of both the Dutch and Ukrainian armed forces,” the Ministry of Defence said in a statement. “They will also strengthen the Dutch defence industry and help position it as a key player in Europe’s emerging drone and robotics sector.”
