Rijkswaterstaat warns of significant traffic disruption in Central and Southern Limburg from Friday, 14 November at 21:00 until Monday, 17 November at 05:00.

During this weekend, the A2 will be completely closed between the Het Vonderen and Urmond junctions. From the Kerensheide junction, measures will be taken to manage traffic and mitigate congestion on the N276 (Sittard – Echt-Susteren).

Road users should expect diversions and considerable delays, which may exceed 60 minutes, both on motorways and on provincial and local roads.

Significant disruption on regional roads

The closure of the A2 will result in much heavier traffic on regional routes during the day, particularly the N276 between Sittard-Geleen and Echt-Susteren, as well as various local roads around these municipalities. Village centres and city access roads will also be noticeably busier. As a result, additional regional travel time may rise to 60 minutes or more.

Rijkswaterstaat therefore urgently advises all road users to adjust their travel plans, so that there is space on the roads for those who have no choice but to travel by car (such as emergency services and urgent medical care). If the works cannot proceed due to weather conditions, the closure will be moved to the backup weekend from 21 to 24 November.

Closures

The A2 between the St. Joost (44) / A73 Maasbracht (22) junction and the Urmond (48) junction will be closed from Friday, 14 November at 21:00 until Monday, 17 November at 05:00.

The slip roads of the intermediate junctions will close an hour earlier and open an hour later. The southern on and off-ramp at the Urmond (48) junction will remain accessible.

Disruption at Kerensheide junction

Several connecting loops at the junction will be closed from Friday, 14 November at 22:00 until Monday, 17 November at 02:00. This measure is necessary to ensure smooth traffic flow during the day.

Additional closures

To manage the flow of traffic on local roads, the following roads will be closed:

  • Sint Joosterweg (Maasgouw) near Ei van St. Joost towards Maasbracht: Friday, 14 November at 23:30 until Sunday, 16 November at 21:00.
  • A2 on-ramp Grathem (41b) towards Maastricht: Friday, 14 November at 23:00 until Sunday, 16 November at 22:00.
  • A73 on-ramp Roermond-Oost (20d) towards Maastricht: Friday, 14 November at 23:00 until Sunday, 16 November at 22:00.
  • Oude Lakerweg (Echt-Susteren) near the De Loop West industrial estate: Reserved as an emergency route for emergency services. Friday, 14 November at 19:00 until Monday, 17 November at 06:00.
  • Hoogveldlaan (Sittard-Geleen) near the N276 towards Hoogveld: Friday, 14 November at 23:30 until Sunday, 16 November at 21:00.

Diversions

National and international traffic from Kerensheide junction with destinations towards Eindhoven/Utrecht/Rotterdam will be diverted via Belgium/N74 to Valkenswaard and via E314/E313 towards Antwerp. Traffic heading for Roermond/Venlo/Nijmegen will be diverted via the A76/N300/N274 or via Germany.

Regional/local traffic west of the A2 will be diverted via Belgium (N75/N78) Maasmechelen. Regional traffic east of the A2 with destinations Urmond, Born, Echt-Susteren will be diverted via the N276.

The first A2 ‘WeekendBreek’

Seven weekend closures are required for the widening of the A2 up to 2029. This series of A2 weekend closures between Het Vonderen and Kerensheide is called ‘WeekendBreek’. Is a WeekendBreek scheduled? Then leave your car at home for the weekend. By using other means of transportation during a ‘WeekendBreek’, we can all help prevent the road network in Central Limburg from grinding to a halt.
