Mayor Hans Verheijen reappointed for six years

During a special city council meeting on Thursday 26 February, Mayor Hans Verheijen was reappointed for another six-year term as Mayor of Sittard-Geleen.

The reappointment was carried out by Governor Emile Roemer of the Province of Limburg.

First day of the lockdown

Hans Verheijen (59) previously served as Mayor in Mill en Sint-Hubert and later in Wijchen. He began his role as Mayor of Sittard-Geleen in March 2020, on the very first day of the COVID lockdown:

“It has been a remarkable six-year period; from starting in a society in isolation due to COVID to experiencing the dynamics of a unique municipality that excels in so many areas while at the same time presenting itself so modestly,” the Mayor said.

“Hans, you enjoy being among people, listening, offering advice, and sometimes providing a shoulder to lean on. That is the connection you cherish so much. It is the key word in how you fulfil your office,” Governor Emile Roemer said before administering the oath of office, thereby officially confirming the reappointment.

An honour

Verheijen said he considers it an honour to serve another term as Mayor for the residents of Sittard-Geleen.

“Toon Hermans once said about Sittard that it was a city to cherish. For me, that applies to the entire municipality. That was the feeling I had in 2019–2020, and I still feel that way. I thank everyone for their trust, and in the coming years I will continue to dedicate myself wholeheartedly to Sittard-Geleen and all its residents.”
