The border controls carried out by the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee (Koninklijke Marechaussee) to prevent migrants without valid papers from entering will be extended by six months, asylum minister David van Weel (VVD) wrote in a letter to Parliament.

According to the outgoing minister, this is necessary “in view of the ongoing threat to public order”, without specifying what that threat entails.

Without valid papers

Van Weel stated that the number of people crossing the European external border without valid documents has indeed decreased but that it remains high. According to the European border agency Frontex, there were 112,375 border crossings up to and including 12 September 2025, which is a decrease of 21 per cent compared to the same period a year earlier.

The minister also observes that the number of asylum seekers entering The Netherlands is falling, but that pressure on the reception centres remains high.
