New rules for PMD waste: more items are now allowed

From 1 January 2026, the rules outlining what can and cannot go into PMD bags have become clearer and more transparent. This makes it easier for residents to separate their waste more effectively.
The updated list includes several changes compared to the previous version. From now on, all plastic and metal packaging and drink cartons may be placed in the PMD, except for fruit and vegetable nets.
Not sure? Use the following questions as a handy aid:
- Is it packaging made of plastic or metal, or is it a drink carton?
- Is the packaging from household use?
- Is it empty?
If the answer to all these questions is YES, the packaging can be disposed of in the PMD bag.
What are the main changes as of 1 January 2026?
- Large packaging foils and empty household spray cans; think of deodorant, hairspray, or whipped cream spray cans. Camping gas or nitrous oxide cylinders remain not allowed.
- Coffee capsules made of aluminium or plastic;
- Paper/plastic and plastic/metal combinations; for example, bread bags, soup pouches, packaging for cold -cut meat, and herb sachets.
Which items are still not permitted in PMD?
- Products that are not packaging;
- Fruit and vegetable nets, such as those for mandarins, oranges, onions, tomatoes;
- Pond and agricultural foil, weed control fabric;
- Hard plastics, such as toys, garden furniture, and plant pots;
- Medical waste.
The revised Yes/No list for PMD marks an important next step towards greater clarity, less contamination, and better recyclability of packaging.
