Hans Verheijen recommended for reappointment as Mayor of Sittard-Geleen

On Thursday, 23 October 2025, the municipal council of Sittard-Geleen decided to recommend Hans Verheijen for reappointment as Mayor of the municipality of Sittard-Geleen.

Reappointment procedure

The first term of Mayor Verheijen’s office will end on 16 March 2026. The Mayor has informed the King's Commissioner that he wishes to be considered for reappointment. In The Netherlands, Mayors are appointed by the Crown.

Appointments are made on the recommendation of the Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations, following a recommendation from the municipal council.

Confidential Committee

The proposal was prepared by a Confidential Committee, which consists of six members of the municipal council and the clerk. The Confidential Committee formed its opinion on the Mayor’s performance, based on various discussions. The Committee’s conclusions were discussed with the Mayor.

The content of the recommendation, the considerations, and the deliberations of the municipal council are classified as secret in accordance with legal regulations. On the proposal of the Confidential Committee, the municipal council of Sittard-Geleen decided, in a closed council meeting on Thursday 23 October 2025, to recommend the Mayor for reappointment.

The recommendation was announced during a subsequent public council meeting on 23 October.

Recommendation to the King

The recommendation will be sent by the King's Commissioner to the Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations. The Minister will then submit the proposal for reappointment to the King. As soon as the Royal Decree is issued, the municipality of Sittard-Geleen will be informed.
